5K Beach Run

Yesterday Allen, Gabriel, Katrina, and Abagail participated in a 5K run at Lackland AFB. It was called their "Beach Run" although I can't figure why since they were hours from any beach that I am aware of. There were a couple of hundred civilians and hundreds of basic trainees participating. (Estimating about 1000 runners.)

The cool thing about the atmosphere was that the trainees were grouped into their squads of about 50 each. Each squad had their own shout - and they shouted it and other songs the entire 5K. Allen said it was pretty motivating. Katrina said it was pretty distracting. Abagail thought it was pretty cool. Gabriel didn't comment. Amelia.....well, her look in the second collage let's us know what she thought of all the people and noise.

Gathering at the start line

Beginning the race. Simon and Oliver climbed a tree to watch the runners go by. I love Amelia's expression in the middle photo. As she watched the hundreds of basic trainees trot by, each yelling their own special shout, she was perplexed. She wasn't quite sure what to make of it all. She did enjoy all the clapping and cheering at the finish.

Gabriel sprinted all out the last stretch to the finish. That's his cross-country and track training coming out. Allen finished and then went back and ran the home stretch with Katrina. I didn't get a photo of Abagail's finish. She came literally jumping up, all bubbly and full of energy, so excited to finish. Only problem was that the squads were massing around her and she couldn't see the finish chute. We had to direct her to the opposite side of a mass of 3-4 squads (50 or so in each) - it was like telling her she needed to go around a solid wall. Once she figured it out off she bounced to the finish.

Gabriel took 1st place for his age group; coming in at just over 24 minutes. He was pretty proud to be able to go up and collect his trophy.

Abagail collected a trophy for coming in 2nd in her age group. She came in at 35:02. I think she was a bit shy to collect her trophy - but loved it all the same.

Katrina had a good finish too. She missed 5th place trophy by just a few seconds. As we reviewed the race she realized that she put the wrong time on her finish sheet. The girl who took the 5th place trophy actually finished just behind Katrina. However, Katrina was an excellent sport. The girl who received the trophy was soooo excited that Katrina decided it was better that she had received it.
